New Year Social Media Tidy Up

The new year is almost upon us, and you know what that means? Yup – time for a social media tidy up! And I’ve got a few quick suggestions and some that will take a bit more time but will also deliver value moving forward.

First, the quick fixes:

  • Check to make sure your profiles are up to date with your current details. Have you moved, changed your hours, switched slogans? Maybe swap in a fresh picture or two.
  • Make sure you’ve got two factor authentication in place. Don’t roll your eyes. You do not want to lose your account to hacking. Trust me. I’ve seen it happen and it is not a pretty thing.
  • Weed out your followers list. Get rid of inactive or deactivated accounts, spammers or bots that seem to have popped up. Yes, it’ll knock down your follower number a bit (probably not much) but the quality is more important than the quantity. Community management is a lot like gardening. It’s easier if the flower bed isn’t as cluttered.

When you’re ready to dig a bit deeper:

  • Review your social media strategy or – on the off chance you’ve been winging it – make one. Look, lots of organisations start off on social media winging it. There’s nothing wrong with it. But the more central social media has become – especially for you, small independent business owner – the more important it is to take it seriously. Don’t put off creating an actual strategy any longer – if you want some professional input into the process, get in touch. I don’t bite and my rates are reasonable.
  • Audit Your Content. I’ve talked on here about content audits for websites but it’s a valuable exercise for social content as well. It gives you a better idea about what works over time, what works at one time vs another time – and reminds you of what you’ve got, which can be great for re-purposing and reusing content. And as I said about social media strategies, I’m happy to help with this – and in fact, having it done by a fresh set of eyes can make the process more effective.

So let’s welcome 2024 in properly – and make sure your social media is in shape and producing the results you want for the rest of the year.
